FONC to mark 200th birthday

Waller, published 1842 - NPG D39232 - © National Portrait Gallery, LondonFONC is to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of artist John Green Waller on Sunday 22nd September (Open House Weekend) at a public ceremony starting at 2.45pm.

Representatives from the various organisations he was associated with will pay tributes and lay wreaths on the grave of this artist, antiquary, brass engraver and lithographer who:

  • designed a stained glass window to Chaucer in Westminster Abbey;
  • was part of the Victorian revival of the medieval art of brass engraving. With his brother Lionel exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851 a magnificent brass, later used as a memorial to their mother and sister (illustration in FONC display)
  • founded the British Archaeological Association and the London and Middlesex Archaeological Society;
  • was elected Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries
  • was born 30th September 1813 and died at 75 Charlton Road, Blackheath on 19th October 1905, aged 92 years, and was buried in Nunhead Cemetery.

An exhibition of photographs of his work will be displayed in the chapel on the Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd, curated by Philip Whittemore of the Monumental Brass Society.
